Powering your home with solar: what you need to know

Media release

Living in the Territory means that solar power is a match-made in heaven on those sunny days.

Harnessing the power of solar is also great for the planet as it’s a renewable energy source with zero harmful emissions.

Learn how you can add solar to your home and start saving on your electricity bills.

You may have noticed solar panels on the roofs of homes and businesses – these are Solar Photovoltaic systems (Solar PV for short).

Basically, these solar panels capture the energy from the sun and convert it to electricity that you can use in your home.

The cost of Solar PV systems vary depending on the type and size of the panels installed. Your solar installer will be able to give you advice around what type will best suit your home and needs. Investing in Solar PV may cost you at first, but can help you save money in the long run.

Powering your home with solar means your electricity bill will be reduced overtime as you will purchase less electricity from the grid.

On average, most customers in the Territory see a return on their investment within five years.

Any unused power within your home is sent back to the grid. You are paid a credit (feed-in tariff) for this unused energy, which you will see on your bill as a 'buy back'.

The Home and Business Battery Scheme encourages households in the Territory to use other renewable energy sources to cut electricity costs.

This scheme allows you to access a $6000 grant to include a battery into a new or existing Solar PV system, providing the battery has a capacity of 7 kilowatt hours or more.

What is the solar feed-in-tariff rate?

The Northern Territory Government announced key changes to Jacana Energy's solar feed-in-tariff (FiT) rates.

As of 1 July 2022 customers who have received the Premium feed-in tariff (26.65 cents per kilowatt hour incl. GST) for four years or more, will be changed to the Standard feed-in tariff (9.13 cents per kilowatt hour incl. GST).

When our homes are powered by solar – we can deliver cheaper, cleaner power right across the Territory. Together, we can reduce our carbon footprint and dependence on fossil fuels.
