Net metering sign-up

This page is for customers currently on gross meter and provides you with important information on how to sign-up to net metering, which would allow you to use the electricity your solar system produces rather than drawing it from the grid.

Why should I upgrade to net metering?

As per our previous communications, in July 2020 the Northern Territory Government announced that commencing July 2022 all customers who had benefited from the Premium feed-in tariff for four years or more would be required to move to a Standard feed-in tariff (9.13 cents per kilowatt hour incl. GST).

Your residence has been identified as having passed that 4-year threshold, but is still setup with gross metering, therefore not allowing you the full benefit from the solar energy your system produces. By upgrading to a new meter which enables net metering, you will maximise your financial benefit from the tariff change.

Step 1: Fill the form below to sign-up

As part of this initiative, your network provider will supply a new meter free of charge to your electrician to install. This means you will save up to $790.65 in new meter costs when you sign-up to net metering by completing the form below before 31 May 2023 (extended to 30 June 2023).

All sign-ups are now closed. Please contact us if you need additional information.

Step 2: Make an appointment with a licensed electrician

After completing the online sign-up form you will need to make an appointment with a licensed electrician who can assess your current installation and provide you with the important information you need to prepare for net metering.

Please note electrician's initial assessment costs and any additional works required to complete the installation would occur at your expense.

Step 3: Make sure your electrician has this checklist

To help with this process, please provide your electrician with the checklist below, so they can advise Power and Water when the meter is ready for installation.

Download the checklist here!

Additional information

The solar system at your residence is currently setup for gross metering. Gross metering solar systems send all solar energy they generate straight into the grid. This means that a gross metered residence is not able to use the solar energy produced to cover the household needs, but instead, uses all required energy from the grid.

The sign-up closing date is 31 May 2023.

As part of this initiative, your network provider will cover the cost of the new meter and basic installation when you sign-up before the closing date. This means you will save up to $790.65 in installation costs.

Please note that where additional works are required to complete the installation, this would occur at your expense.

The Northern Territory Government recently announced key changes to Jacana Energy's solar feed-in tariff (FiT) rates.

As of 1 July 2022 customers who have received the Premium feed-in tariff (26.65 cents per kilowatt hour incl. GST) for four years or more, will be changed to the Standard feed-in tariff (9.13 cents per kilowatt hour incl. GST).

The Standard feed-in tariff will start with the net metering upgrade. Alternatively for those customers who remain on gross metering, the new feed-in tariff will start after the sign-up closing date.

Once you upgrade to net metering we will work out your monthly bill using your smart meter.
